SAINT-NAZAIRE, THE TOWN BY THE SEA WHICH NEVER FAILS TO SURPRISE YOU!

Located in the region of France known as ‘Les Pays de la Loire’, between the Guérande Peninsula and the town of Nantes, historical capital of Brittany, lies the town of Saint-Nazaire just waiting to be discovered with its coastline punctuated by over 20 beaches. These include ‘La Plage de M. Hulot’ immortalized my Jacques Tati’s famous film ‘les Vacances de M Hulot’.

Its maritime port, ‘Le Port Atlantique Nantes Saint-Nazaire’, is the largest along the French Atlantic coast.

The ‘not to be missed’

The not to be missed visits and places of interest to discover all there is to know about the town and its history, deeply etched in its maritime heritage include:

  • l’Escal’Atlantic, which turns the spot-light on the majestic transatlantic cruise ships and the regular routes across the ocean (a fascinating subject linked to the town of Saint-Nazaire twice over by virtue of its status as a site of naval construction and former transatlantic port).  This particular site of interest to visitors has be award the quality label of ‘Qualité Tourisme’.
  • The submarine l’Espadon, a French submarine dating back to the 1950’s, which is moored in a lock of the impressive submarine base which dominates the port of Saint-Nazaire ;
  • l’Écomusée the museum which tells the story of this town built and then rebuilt in a single century;
  • The boat trip Saint-Nazaire sur mer, to discover our town ‘as seen from the ocean’s waves’, the very best way to appreciate it from every angle; as well as the guided tours of the major players of local industry :  the naval Shipyards, the Aeronautical giant and the port itself.

Area

From Saint-Nazaire to La Baule, from Guérande to La Brière, from Le Croisic along la ‘Côte Sauvage’, from Pornichet to Le Pouliguen, from La Turballe to Piriac-sur-Mer, the south of Brittany will win over all who come here with its diversity of horizons steeped in tradition and heritage.  Every day experience different emotions, you are guaranteed never to tire of ‘her’, as the south of Brittany (part of Les Pays de la Loire) reveals to you all her treasures: the beauty of her landscapes, her lively ports, her many beaches, seaside resorts, villages and towns.  To love this region, you need to have a passion for the sea, the seafarers and ships.  It is from these very ports that the majestic cruise liner, the trawlers and the yachts set sail.  Some of you may choose the great blue yonder, others may prefer to venture up the estuary as far as Nantes. For those who are more ‘landlubber’ than ‘sea-dog’ there is a whole choice of things to do here…take a dip in the sea, stroll along the foreshore gathering shellfish…discover the local area and its gastronomy with its salted butter flavour…

La Côte Sauvage

From Le Pouliguen to Le Croisic, the cliffs, caves and rocks line the contours of the coastline out over the vastness of the ocean.  ‘La Côte Sauvage’ is an ideal route to follow stopping along the way to discover the richness and diversity of the local heritage.  Including the beach at Port-Lin, the headland ‘la Pointe du Fort’ and the Menhir of ‘la Pierre-Longue’ at Le Croisic, la plage Valentin, la Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Mûrier, the church of Saint-Guénolé at Batz-sur-Mer, the beaches of ‘Pen-Bron’ and la plage des Bretons at La Turballe. Along the way be sure to visit the Océarium at Le Croisic or the Musée des marais salants of Batz-sur-Mer and stop off to discover the traditional local towns and villages of La Turballe, Le Pouliguen and Le Croisic. The rugged and wild coastline of ‘La Côte Sauvage’ attracts those of us who will brave the weather conditions no matter how rough they may be.  It provides an exceptional site for scuba diving in its deep and often tumultuous waters – solitary adventurers be warned do not allow yourself to be hypnotized by ‘her’ charms.
